Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns of Staphylococcus aureus Isolates in Tertiary Hospital in Somalia: A Retrospective Study

A retrospective study of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from a tertiary hospital in Mogadishu, examining MRSA prevalence and antibiotic resistance patterns.

Research overview

This study evaluated the epidemiological characteristics and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Staphylococcus aureus isolates collected between 2019 and 2024 at a tertiary hospital in Mogadishu, Somalia.

The research analyzed 1,381 isolates from clinical specimens using standard microbiological identification and Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion susceptibility testing according to CLSI criteria.

The findings highlight a high burden of MRSA and reinforce the need for local antibiogram data, continuous surveillance, and antimicrobial stewardship programs in Somalia.

Key findings

  • Of 1,381 Staphylococcus aureus isolates, 670 (48.51%) were identified as MRSA.
  • Wound samples and blood cultures were the most common specimen sources.
  • MRSA isolates showed high resistance to penicillin G, erythromycin, and tetracycline.
  • Very low resistance was observed for linezolid, vancomycin, and quinupristin-dalfopristin.
